Eurofins EMLab P&K utilizes the E-PERM® system for radon testing measurement. E-PERM® is easy to use with consistent results. E-PERM® utilizes Electret Ion Chamber (EIC) technology, which is more accurate than charcoal canisters and better suited for radon testing professionals. Radon Exposure

Radon exposure varies day to day, month to month in a home.  To truly know radon exposure, it’s best to start with a short term test then perform a long term test if desired.  The long term radon tests reflect a more accurate picture of exposure to radon.

For most people, the greatest exposure to radon occurs in the home. Radon levels are usually higher in basements, cellars or living spaces in contact with soil. Well-tested, durable and cost-efficient methods exist for preventing radon in new houses and reducing radon in existing dwellings.
Note: EPA recommends you fix your home if the radon level is 4 pCi/L or higher.

According to the EPA, radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. Cancer.gov adds that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. Scientists estimate that 15,000 to 22,000 lung cancer deaths in the United States each year are related to radon. In fact, the EPA stated, "About 1 in 15 U.S. homes is estimated to have radon levels at or above this EPA action level. Testing your home is the only way to know if you have elevated radon levels."

What is the difference between E-PERM® vs. Charcoal Canisters for radon testing?

E-PERM®

  • Easy to use with consistent results
  • Better, more accurate technology and better suited for a business doing radon testing
  • Technology can be used for varying lengths of time
  • Can be used for short or long term radon tests (charcoal only provides a short term picture of radon exposure)
  • Most E-PERMs are we send out for deployment are for 2-7 days, but many clients also request long term tests for a better understanding of the exposure in the home or building they are testing.

Charcoal Canisters

  • Can be influenced by humidity and temperature and must be considered with each test. Charcoal absorbs moisture easily. The absorption is affected by hot and cold environments. This adds additional factors that the client must consider and record and more attention to transport times.
  • Only useful once and only for short term radon testing.
